About the Catalog
OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) is the NHS version of the Follett catalog for books, maps, equipment, video tapes, and kits. To access OPAC from an LMC computer, click the OPAC icon on the desktop. To access OPAC from any computer in the high school: Start -> Programs -> Follett Applications -> OPAC. You may also browse the library catalog from any computer with internet access by using WEB Collection.

Keywords & Help with Searching
Keyword searching allows you quick thorough retrieval of information in most databases like book catalogs or the internet. A keyword search will work in Follett OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) or WEB Collection, S.R.C., and First Search.You may do simple keyword searches using one word, or you may do advanced searches using operators. Two advanced operators are "and" (narrows the search) and "or" (broadens the search).

Different types of Searches
Keyword searching will find the most books for you.
Subject searching is by specific topic.
Author searching is by last name first.
Title searching is by the exact title.
Call number searching uses the alpha and numeric Dewey number.
Series searching finds books by the series title.
"Browse" many shelves in an area to find related books.

Call Numbers
OPAC and the Web Collection will give you a call number in the upper left hand corner of the screen. This will be a combination of letters and numbers. This call number is located on the book spine.

Special Call Numbers
AUD -- Cassette tapes or records.
B -- Biography and autobiography.
DES -- Located at the circulation Desk.
KIT -- Audiovisual material. You must ask for help at the desk.
F or FIC -- Fiction, mysteries, and science fiction are located in the low shelves, under the display windows, or in the paperback racks.
GRA -- Graphics are located in the map drawers. Please ask for help.
MAP -- Maps are located in the map drawers. Please ask for help.
OFF -- Located in the LMC Office. You must ask for help.
R -- Reference. Not available to be checked out.
VT -- Video tapes are checked out to teachers. Please ask for help.

Biographies and Books About Authors
To find biographical information:
  • Do a keyword search in Web Collection or in OPAC using the author's last name.
  • Search SRC by the author's last name, first name.
  • Browse the Biography section.

Literary Criticism
To find literary criticism:
  • Do a keyword search in Web Collection or in OPAC using the author's last name.
  • Do a keyword search in OPAC using the title of a book.
  • Search ProQuest by the author's last name, first name.

Quotations
Books with quotations can be found in the following sections:
R 808.88 (the reference section)
808.08 (may be checked out)

Find quotation books in either place.
Reference books must stay in the LMC but the others circulate.
You may also search the internet.

Short Stories
Most books with short stories are found in the Story Collection (special call numbers beginning with SC) on the shelves underneath the library display case windows. Use Web Collection or OPAC to find more stories. Anthologies often contain short stories.

Books about can be found in the following sections:
